Adult swim classes a matter of safety for young and old
Dr. Cathy “CJ” Jones Dickson says swimming is the only sport that saves lives.
She works as an emergency room doctor in Leominster and has seen firsthand the injuries from water-based accidents.
“From the years I’ve spent in emergency medicine, the injuries I have seen are terrible. Nothing is worse than pronouncing a person dead from drowning; submersion injuries have bad outcomes. The only solution is knowing how to swim and learning about water safety and then imparting that knowledge to your family,” said Dickson.
CJ grew up on an island in Maine and as a child learned to swim. “I have three children and all of them are swimmers,” she said of the generational effect.
As a member of the U.S. Masters Swimming program, CJ became a certified Swimming Saves Lives instructor. In partnership with Worcester’s Central Community YMCA on Main Street, she began the Adult Learn to Swim program four years ago.
