“The Greater Worcester Community Foundation has announced the recipients of its 2015 Spring Discretionary Grants totaling $715,000 and awarded $616,650 in college scholarships.
The college scholarships to local residents for the 2015-2016 academic year range from $300 to $5,000 and were given to 376 students who are beginning or continuing their college educations. Recipients throughout Worcester County were selected through a competitive process on the basis of merit, financial need and special criteria established by the foundation’s donors.
The Greater Worcester Community Foundation’s scholarship program enables college-bound high school seniors to be considered for multiple opportunities through a single online application. The next application cycle will be open in early January.
The discretionary grants provide annual, renewable funding for local nonprofits. The spring cycle is half of the annual $1.4 million in discretionary grants that the foundation will award this year for programs in arts and culture, community development, education, the environment, health, and human services. Discretionary grants are funded through endowments created by local citizens.”
“Recreation Worcester is a free summer program for kids ages 7-13 that includes swim safety classes, and instructional activties at 10 of Worcester’s parks. Recreation Worcester takes the place of the former city summer program Wheels to Water & Beyond.
“Recreation Worcester is hoping to get more kids into our parks and keep them active. This program keeps our City’s children healthy, safe, and learning during the summer months,” said Petty. “The Summer Youth Corp is looking to do the same for our young adults. I look forward to watching City employees work side by side with Worcester’s young adults as they gain the professional experience they need to move forward in life.”
June 29 will start the program off with a four-day “Swim Week” at various sites across the city including the Boys & Girls Club, Girls Incorporated, the Jewish Community Center, YMCA Central Branch, YMCA Shore Park, and the YWCA.”
